In reply to <a href="https://www.positiveparenting.com/should-i-spank-my-child/#comment-40329">Tiffany</a>.

I hope you are joking. There are millions of bratty kids and teenagers that grow-up to become the adult-jerks in society. All because some parent either did not use stern and hands-on discipline, or decided to use-their-words, which typically does not work if a child is, dumb or cynical. Some kids don't require a spanking or whooping, others do. You may have a child that you can talk to, try that with one that doesn't care what you have to say or how their tantrum makes you feel. If you do not show that there can be serious consequences from don't wrong than your simply telling your child "do as you like".

I spank my 9 and 3 year old sons. This happens very infrequently because they both understand that misbehaving May warrant a spanking. It is not the only tool we use to discipline but has proven to be very effective.

I really appreciate that you make a point to give other strategies of discipline instead of just saying, "don't spank your children!" I agree with you. I think so many parents spank their children because they just don't know what else to do.

Discipline doesn’t always mean punishment and humiliation as what most people perceived it to be. It could be in many forms. What’s important is that, in getting your child to behave the way you wanted him or her to, you’re not losing his or her dignity in the process. But is it really possible to discipline a child without hitting him or her? Is it really necessary to spank your kids? Knowing how to discipline a child is never easy. As a parent, it is important to consider the fact that you can’t solve every problem concerning your kids but there are certain ways worth dealing with for that matter.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that parents develop alternative methods to disciplining your child or children other then physical abuse, like spanking. Research and studies conducted by the American Academy of Pediatrics conclude that spanking a child is not only physically harmful, but is actually emotionally harmful to both the parent and the child. Although spanking a child may put a stop to the behavior you are disciplining your child for, it will only put a stop to it for a limited amount of time. It is better to teach your child by sitting them down and having a face to face discussion with them not only about why their behavior is not allowed, but also teaching them alternative behavior. Physical abuse and spanking can have a lasting negative effect on the parent and child's relationship far into the future. It can also very easily lead to the child physically abusing their children once they are parents.
